Advanced Dungeons & Dragons

Change your fantasies,
a new edition is out
spend some cash or else

I’ve been a fan and player of AD&D since it was just D&D. :) I loved first edition, and thought that second edition was pretty cool too, though there were far too many supplements to buy to have all of the accessories for an “amazing gaming experience”. Then, Wizards of the Coast (WotC) released thrid edition and it was really different. They didn’t just update a few things and re-issue some older supplements to compliment their new line, WotC changed the mechanics of the game so that 1e and 2e were not compatible with 3e. Then, realizing that it kinda sucked, they released version 3.5 which was to fix 3e. Now, WotC has released 4e which changes the mechanics yet again. If I can’t even use the new supplements with what I already own, why would I plop down the big bucks for it?

Microsoft

People love to hate
this computer juggernaut,
but still use it’s stuff

I read blogs where people complain about how much they have Microsoft’s this or that, and yet they write there diatribes on machines running some form of Windows, usually in some type of program by Microsoft. In fact, it seems the only people who I come into contact with who hate Microsoft are Microsoft users. When I ask them why they don’t switch, they always have some reason and it’s almost always never a good one.

Diet Coke with Lime

Citrus-flavored crack
bubbles too big for syringe;
guess I’ll pop the top

I never thought I’d end up addicted to coke. I always thought it would be something more illicit. But, honest to god, it was easier to quit smoking than to stop drinking soda.

The Golden Compass (2007)

Big stars cannot save
even the brightest movie
without it’s demon

I had such great hopes for this movie. It had all the stars and certainly a big enough budget but missed the mark. Everyone I know who read the book first, hated the movie, but everyone who hadn’t read the book loved it. At least I’ve been able to convince all of my friends who hadn’t read the series of books to read them.

Shrek the Third (2007)

You can’t judge a book
byt it’s gross profit alone,
not new, but funny

I am so glad that I waited to get this from the library instead of spending money on it. It had it’s funny moments, but unfortunately they were few and far between.

Roman Holiday (1953)

June 11th, 2008

Tired of boring life
get refreshed in black and white
savor young Audrey

Audrey Hepburn is so adorable in this movie, but for me it was the great job done by Gregory Peck that cemented this films place among the all-time classics of cinema.

Transformers (2007)

Robots in disguise!
It’s not more than meets the eye
but who needs fresh plots?

This is how I always imagined the story when I was a kid, except that is was me that the Autobots sought out, instead of that Witwicky kid. But, even my imagination didn’t have the giant robots looking so cool, even if it did have a more interesting story.

The Transformers: The Movie (1986)

Movies based on toys?
Voice-overs by famous folks?
Can toys even die?

I loved these toys when I was a kid and remember anxiously awaiting this films theatrical release. My mom took my brother and I and a bunch of my friends to a matinée showing and we thought it was awesome. But, I mostly remember it being so cool because one of the dinobots used a swear word.

High Fidelity by Nick Hornby

June 11th, 2008

I’d give you five ways
to think about this story,
but I’m self-absorbed

This is one of the best novels I’ve read. While not my favorite Nick Hornby book, it still manages to make it into the top 10, insuring Hornby a spot in my top 5 all time best novelists.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J. K. Rowling

The favored son dies
to know if he has been loved,
while others just die

There are two kinds of people that I know, those who have read Rowling’s Harry Potter series and those that don’t read.
